"As Police Chief of the Phoenix Police Department, Timber Trails is vital to our efforts of having a positive impact on less-fortunate children outside traditional law enforcement methods. With many children turning to gangs and violence in Phoenix, the Timber Trails program gives them the skills to resolve conflict in a nonviolent manner. These children are given the chance to make the right decisions. Timber Trails has a positive influence on the participants and will continue to pay many dividends for the rest of their lives."

"One might ask how one week of summer camp can reduce the fear of living and playing on mean crime-ridden streets. The answer is easy; the memory of that week lasts a lifetime. I know because I had those memories. As a boy growing up in those same conditions, I went to Charity Camp in the country and have never forgotten the happiness it gave me. I remember it as if it were yesterday. For one entire week I was free of the gangs and fights. I learned to swim and roast marshmallows, and listen to a camp counselor by the name of Harry Belafonte (yes, the Belafonte) tell spooky stories around the campfire. Someone's gift served to shine a light of happiness and hope in what was then the bleakness of my young life."
